THERMO FEEDBACK FROM FALL 2017 – STAR TREK THEMED CLASS

Complete Student Feedback from EGN 3343 for my Themed Thermdynamics class.

  • As an adult student, I appreciate the value professor Celestin brings to teaching. He is always looking to assist students even when it puts him behind in other areas of his work. I could only hope that professor Celestin is given the opportunity to continue to teach, for it would be a great loss for students not to be able to have such a great professor.
  • teaching style is hard to follow. jumps from one topic to another with little to no introduction. lectures from notes but somehow makes it seem like he is jumping around in his notes. does a great job of letting students know what will be on the quizzes and tests.
  • good
  • I wish he could teach more classes I have to ahead of me. Hands down my favorite professor . This university needs more people like him without a doubt
  • I feel bad for the students that don’t get to you as a professor! Thanks for helping me understand thermo!!
  • Really enjoyed Celestin’s approach to the class.
  • The best thermo professor I’ve ever had. The fact that he uses a process based approach to problems makes the material much easier to understand.
  • Celestin is a one of a kind professor who over does his job and adds creativity to his work. He is smart and funny and is open to help most of the time. There are a few problems with him like most people such as his excessive weight for his quiz grades and his lack of providing useful study materials until half way through the semester. This was a very big problem that had cost me most of my grade. I wish his quizzes were built for learning and improvement rather than evaluation. Thermodynamics isnt so hard but with Celestin it can be a challenge.
  • Dr. Celestin is a very nice person and his lectures are entertaining. I’ve enjoyed his sense of humor.
  • I withdrew from a previous Thermodynamics course taught by another professor here at USF and I believe that it was one of the best choices I have made. Dr. Celestin is a much better instructor and his teaching style is perfect for a course like thermodynamics. He taught the material the way that he understood it and simplified it from what many textbook were otherwise trying to teach us. The way he presented the fundamental equations and concepts really clicked for me and it is how I too learn and work though the problems, which is great to have since there are multiple ways to solve a math problem and finding the best way that works for you makes a big difference. Dr. Celestin, without fail, also kept the material interesting to learn and fun to do from the way he would mix in jokes with his lessons to having creative yet practical stories with quiz material to test our understanding. Dr. Celestin is easily on of my favorite professor I have ever taken.
  • You’re honestly a really fantastic professor and it’s glaringly obvious you love what you do. I understand this job has to wear on you (my dad is a professor and it wears on him), and I applaud you for putting up with our shit as wee little bachelor’s students in the way that you do. I definitely know we can be annoying at times. One small criticism, I feel like you almost expect too little of us, sometimes the classes move a little slow and it becomes somewhat difficult to pay attention as you occasionally over explain things we already know, but I understand you just don’t want to leave anyone behind and I’d much rather have the class move too slow than too fast. I hope you teach for a long time, you truly are an exceptional professor.
  • Great professor! I would suggest that all TAs should have taken thermo already and put one single announcement for their availability that can be updated, like the syllabus is updated. Thank you for everything Celestin! I will hopefully pass
  • A gifted teacher.
  • Celestin is an incredible teacher and I liked the way he gave general equations, rather than having us memorize every specific equation.
  • Do more examples in class.
  • wonderful professor who really cares that his students fully understand the material. He expects his students to know their stuff but does not expect an unreasonable level of understanding for someone just learning the information, and I believe that this is the most respectable way to test students. I would love for him to teach a Chemical Engineering course like Transport 1 in the spring.
  • Dr. Celestin is simply amazing. Clearly he has a zest for the topic and for teaching. He was very clear and thorough. Excellent attitude and communication. The problems I faced with the class had everything to do with the hurricane closure and subsequent scramble with restarting 5 intensive classes, so I would not consider my less than stellar grades to be a reflection of his efforts. He really seemed to go above and beyond to make sure we did not fall off the train, so to speak. He was very clear with what was expected, and he was very stimulating with demonstrations and working through problems. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM to anyone taking this class going forward. I hope to be able to find a way to work with him in the future!
  • He is very knowledgeable and teaches well.
  • Dr. Celestin, has been nothing but exceptional, and a proper description for what a engineering professor should strive to be. He is phenomenal
  • He is an amazing teacher and his way of teaching students is very unique and it has help me learn the material
  • Dr. Celestin was a amazing professor. Made his class easy to understand and helped use really grasp each concept at a deeper leave. The set up was extremely structured and that was very helpful to being able to plan ahead. All in all, amazing professor. Would love if he could teach any upper level chemical engineering electives.
  • Very good teacher, I would love to have him teach one of my classes again.
  • Dr. Celestin is an amazing teacher. USF should do better to employ more teachers like him. He genuinely cares and respects each student as an individual, and he takes disgustingly dry subject matter and makes it fun. He also makes the class VERY easy to do well in FOR THE STUDENTS THAT WORK. He’s hilarious, and it’s a shame that he won’t be teaching thermodynamics because I wish my sister could take thermos with him, too. He is VERY accessible, inside and outside of class. He does everything he can to ensure that each student who wants to work hard and do well, has the resources to do so. This is rare amongst engineering professors – most of them preach a ‘sink or swim, if you can’t survive here, you’re worthless’ approach. He does this awesome theme thing which is really fun for us. Engineering doesn’t have to be a drag, and he proves it. I’d say USF should bump his salary and beg that he stays for the rest of his life/recruits more teachers. Many of our teachers, lets not beat around the bush, SUCK, and if every teacher were a ‘Dr. Celestin’, USF Engineering would be a much, much better place. I also loved how he told us that he failed Thermo on his first try – he told us exactly why so we could make sure NOT to make those mistakes. Also gave me hope – just because you fail a class doesn’t mean you can’t be a successful person one day. USF DON’T LET THIS GUY GO.
  • I don’t feel like I learned much because of how much focus you put on deriving formulas and steps to solve problems instead of what stuff actually means for Thermodynamics
  • One of the best professors I have had since starting college. Very nice and helpful!
  • Awesome professor
  • One of the best professors I’ve had at USF. Teaches the information in a way that’s easy to understand and interesting enough to keep my attention. He’s easily accessible for students too.
  • My favorite professor ever. Truly cares for his students and goes out of his way to make assignments interesting and to give us real world understanding of what we are learning. Professor made lots of videos, made the class themed and added to the excitment. Would love to take many more courses with him.
  • Thank you Dr Celestin for your state tables and awesome drawings. It was great learning thermo with you.
  • Doesn’t always explain things in enough detail or cover tested material as much as students need. Seemed to enjoy throwing tricks into quizzes and exams to trip students up. Decided to throw 3 quizzes at us in the last week of class rather than simply eliminating a quiz, which isn’t very appreciated.
  • Best teacher at USF need I say more. Genuinely cares and the class is interesting.
  • Michael Celestin, is one of the best professors I have ever had. He had a good sense of humor which made the class enjoyable for me personally. He also used tons of visual representations for things, which is what I also needed. Overall, you definitely need to keep Celestin on as a professor, so he can continue to educate young minds. I come out of this class knowing all of the concepts discussed in class. I worked hard, and I am happy with the knowledge I have gained all thanks to him! You da bomb Celestin.
  • I think you are very good professor, I think that having homework videos were a good addition to the class. I think though having worked out solutions to the all homework is better though. Dropping Quizzes is a good touch, I wish that you rounded.
  • he is a very fun professor!!! i like his class very interesting.
  • Prof. Celestin did a fantastic job instructing this course. He was extremely straight forward in his teaching methods and went above and beyond to make sure the students understood the topics.
  • Great professor, makes lectures and class enjoyable.
  • Excellent professor couldn’t be better
  • Its wonderful to have a teacher that so obviously cares about his students. Definitely refreshing.
